About Me

Hello! My name is Daphne and I was born on May 1st, 1999. My parents, Olivia and Doug, gave birth to me at Holloman Air Force Base. I was taken from my mother at birth and raised by humans in the laboratory nursery. At 4 months old, I was used as a subject in a biomedical research study. When I was almost a year old, I was introduced to another chimp my age, Luisita, who remains one of my best friends to this day. Eventually, the chimps at HAFB were turned over to The Coulston Foundation, a biomedical research laboratory.

In 2002, Save the Chimps rescued me and my best friends Luisita, Belinda, and April. We were added to a large chimpanzee family and moved to our new island home in sunny Florida with the other members of our family on Rufus’s island. Today, I am as lovely and kind as my mother, Olivia. I have a great time roaming with my friends on our expansive island, where I can often be seen carrying blankets and other items around until I find the perfect spot to rest. I love my meals of fresh fruits and vegetables, along with occasional special treats like oatmeal. I am never one to miss a meal, and love eating any leftovers that my friends may not have wanted. I always greet my caregivers with a smile. I am beloved by both my chimpanzee family and my caregivers.
