Memorial Day commemorates U.S. men and women who died while in the military service. We here at Save the Chimps are mindful of the ultimate sacrifice the defenders of our country have given.
The veterans we care for, our original Space Chimps, served in the U.S. Air Force and as such we are attentive of their sacrifices for our country. On behalf of Amy, Daisy, Dana, Emily, Garfield, Gogi, Gromek, Hannah, Jennifer, Lil’ Mini, Liza, Tammy and Wes and in memory of Debbie, Emory, Faith, Hanzie, Kendra, Marty, Phyllis, and Waylon who served active duty in the United States Air Force, Save the Chimps offers its remembrance and respect.
Save the Chimps was founded by the late Dr. Carole Noon in order to provide permanent retirement for the Air Force chimpanzees, who had been used in decades of space and biomedical research. In 2001, 21 Air Force chimpanzees arrived at Save the Chimps and were introduced into a single family. Over the past decade, elder chimps have passed away, the Air Force family has grown smaller, and the social dynamics have changed. As a result, the members of our original Air Force group will be integrated with other chimpanzees in the coming months. We look forward to seeing the Air Force chimps make new friends and explore a new island home.
Moving the surviving members of the Air Force group to new island homes will provide an opportunity to renovate the original Air Force building and island within the next year. STC’s oldest building and island is in need of an upgrade, including replacement of structures and steel.
With this renovation, STC will come full circle:
The first building to house chimpanzees at Save the Chimps will become the home of the final chimpanzee group to depart our New Mexico facility next year. Dr. Noon would be pleased.
It is because of your continued support that we are able to provide the chimps with top-quality veterinary care, daily servings of fresh fruits & vegetables and loving attention.
Your kindness makes a difference and we thank you.
“As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.”
– John F. Kennedy
