Today marks World Chimpanzee Day, a day dedicated to this incredible, social and sentient species. In honor of World Chimpanzee Day, we are thrilled to share the incredible progress made by three of our cherished and newest residents: Tonka, Jacob, and Cayleb. These resilient individuals have come a long way since their rescue last year. Jacob and Cayleb were rescued from the former Wildlife Waystation in California, and Tonka was rescued from a basement cage where he lived in isolation. These three friends now live with companionship and comfort in a large family group of 18 chimpanzees on Doug’s Island. Here are some of the latest photos taken of Tonka, Cayleb, and Jacob, living with new freedoms and new friendships at Save the Chimps.

Integrating our new residents into large chimpanzee groups takes time, patience, and the hard work of a dedicated and experienced behavioral team. Learn more about our social integration process from our expert primatologist and head behaviorist at the sanctuary, Dr. Andrew Halloran.
Two pillars of sanctuary life are companionship and freedom, and thanks to our supporters, these boys will experience them for the rest of their lives. Some actions you can take in honor of World Chimpanzee Day include:
- Make a one-time donation or monthly recurring donation to support the exemplary care our chimpanzee residents deserve
- Symbolically adopt a chimpanzee and receive a custom digital certificate, digital biography, and a one-year subscription to the enewsletter, Pant-Hoots to Parents
- Learn about chimpanzees on our website or with our free downloadable ‘chimp facts’ e-booklet
- Take the pledge to not purchase greeting cards with chimpanzees posing or watch movies, television shows, or social media videos with live chimpanzees in unnatural settings
- Spread awareness about chimpanzees by forwarding this email or sharing our posts on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, or Threads
Happy World Chimpanzee Day, and thank you for making rescues like this possible.
