We at Save the Chimps are excited to introduce you to our more than 250 amazing chimpanzee residents! Each month we will feature one of the 12 islands at the Sanctuary so that you can get to know the chimpanzees that make up the families and the personality of the group as a whole.

As we kick off 2016, we would like to introduce you to Air Force Island, home to Late’s family. The island was originally designed and built for Save the Chimps’ first residents – 21 of the original Air Force chimps. Sadly over time, many of the elder chimpanzees have passed. Today there are nine surviving Air Force chimpanzees at Save the Chimps and they have since been integrated into new family groups.
Late’s family consists of chimpanzees rescued from both The Coulston Foundation and Wildlife Animal Orphanage, an animal rescue that went bankrupt in 2011 and needed a home for it’s chimpanzees.
Late’s family hosts a multitude of personalities from Wally’s energetic antics to Ace who can often be found relaxing on the 3-acre island.

Ron’s Family
In February we would like to introduce you to Ron’s Family. Ron’s family consists of chimpanzees rescued from both The Coulston Foundation and the pet trade.
Chimpanzees from the pet trade usually have difficulty adjusting to living with other chimpanzees. They often grow up in a home and are treated like a human child. By the time they are rescued, many believe they are human and find it very challenging to relate to other chimpanzees. Over time, they do acclimate.
April, Kramer, and Connor the 2nd are all former pet chimpanzees. Today they are living and thriving in a family group of 23 chimpanzees.
There are several young chimpanzees living in Ron’s family , making this group an energetic one, full of family fun. April is often on her favorite platform with a large nest of blankets while the youngsters play around and on the poles extending above her.

Alice’s Family
In March we would like to introduce you to Alice’s Family. The chimpanzees in Alice’s Family were rescued from The Coulston Foundation. During their time at the Coulston Foundation most chimpanzees lived in isolation in 5’x5’x7′ cages. Upon rescuing the Coulston chimpanzees, introductions were made to form chimpanzee families. They learned how to play, love, laugh and groom, all natural for chimpanzees. Alice’s family was the first complete chimpanzee family to migrate from New Mexico to their island home in Florida.
Alice’s building is also home to Cheetah and Timmy who live separately from the large social group. Perhaps because Cheetah lived alone for so long, or perhaps because he is an artistic soul who sees the world differently than the average chimp, Cheetah had a hard time making friends over the years. He’s met chimps young and old, male and female, but finding someone he “clicked” with was a challenge. Finally Cheetah found friendship with Timmy, a male who also spent many years living alone, and who, like Cheetah has a fondness for painting.
Because Cheetah and Timmy are not in a large family group, they will move into the Special Needs Building which include large outdoor areas with grass, palm trees, swings, and platforms that accommodates small groups like Cheetah’s. In the meantime, Cheetah and Timmy spend their time painting, grooming, interacting with their caregivers, enjoying enrichment, and time-share an island with Alice’s Family.

Kiley’s Family
Kiley’s Family is going through the transition of integrating a new family member. Lisa Marie, who became a resident of Save the Chimps in 2015, is being introduced into the group. Introducing a chimpanzee into an established family is a long process but Lisa Mare has met many members of the family. She has close bonds with Jaybee, Kiley, Ariel, Luke, and Virgil. She is still learning the intricacies of chimpanzee politics and hierarchy, but for her age and background she has adapted extremely well so far. We can’t wait to see her relationships blossom as she grows older and finds her place among her new family.

Bobby’s Family
In June we would like to introduce you to Bobby’s Family. Bobby’s Family consists of two groups who time-share the island. The smaller of the two groups includes Terry, Indie, Cayenne and one of our newest residents, Tarzan. Some members of the larger group, like Jeannie, have been introduced to Terry’s group so can switch back and forth between the two families. We hope to someday have these two groups combined into one family!

Doug’s Family
Doug’s family is a diverse group with members rescued from the pet trade, medical research, and five members of the Air Force group, the original chimps rescued by Save the Chimps in 2001. Doug’s family is home to sweet Mona who, with an estimated birth year of 1960, is believed to be the oldest chimp at Save the Chimps.
This lively group loves island parties and many of them enjoy painting as an enrichment activity.

Tanya’s Family
Tanya’s family primarily consists of chimpanzees rescued from research. Those not rescued from research are the beautiful and intelligent Vicky who is a former pet and Jude and Gabe who were accidental births, born at the Sanctuary. Gabe and Jude add some much-needed energy to their family, often convincing the elder chimps to engage in play.

Tapioca’s Family
Tapioca’s Family was the last chimpanzee family to make the cross-country trip known as The Great Chimpanzee Migration. Between 2003-2011, 27 round trips between New Mexico and Florida ferried the chimpanzees to their new island homes in sunny Florida.
Tapioca lived in two different laboratories before being rescued. She is strong-willed, feisty, and often spotted carrying a pile of blankets on her back.
