Tonka is now thriving at Save the Chimps!

The final episode of Chimp Crazy highlighted Tonka’s rescue and arrival to Save the Chimps in 2022. After Tonka’s quarantine, a period for our new rescues to receive health checks and acclimate to their new home, he was introduced to two other chimpanzees, Jacob and Cayleb. The beautiful bond Tonka shares with Cayleb became even more special when we discovered that Cayleb is Tonka’s son. The trio quickly became close and were eventually integrated into Doug’s Family, a large chimpanzee group on one of the sanctuary’s twelve 3-acre island homes. Tonka’s group now includes 17 chimps, including his newest friends: Ursula, Angie the 2nd, Andrea the 2nd, Lil’ Mini, and September.

We hope the series’ popularity will lead to the passing of the Captive Primate Safety Act, which prohibits the ownership of non-human primates.
