This Mother’s Day, we’re honoring April the 1st, a chimpanzee who exhibits the power of motherly love. Born in 1979, April was separated from her mother shortly after birth and spent much of her early life as a pet and entertainer. After being rescued by Save the Chimps in 2002, April initially struggled to adjust to life in a chimpanzee family. But over time, she found a close companion in Ron and their family grew.

Melody, an accidental birth at the sanctuary in 2007, lacked maternal care from her biological mother; she found a loving mother figure in April. In 2008, April stepped into the role and embraced Melody, caring for her as she would her own child.

It was a joy to see her carry Melody, groom her, and provide the nurturing qualities a loving mother offers. Today, April and Melody enjoy life with over 20 other chimpanzees, and April continues to be a loving and protective presence. Once known for stirring up trouble, April has mellowed with age, now spending her days on her own terms, whether relaxing solo or sharing moments with close companions. April’s story is a powerful reminder of the power of love, compassion, and maternal instincts.
