It is with a heavy heart that we announce the death of our beloved resident Joe at age 35, as a result of heart disease.

“Joe was loved by his chimp and human family alike,” says care staffer Ashley Cooley. “He was goofy and friendly, and well-respected by his chimp family, with whom he spent most afternoons out on the island. His favorite food was cucumbers, and he’d happily pick up the extras other chimps rejected. During evening rounds, care staff would often see Joe performing sunset ‘yoga’ out on the structures. He will be greatly missed by all of us who had the privilege to know and love him.”

Joe was born in 1989 and used as an infant by Hollywood trainers until he was 10 years old, when he was transferred to the Mobile Zoo in Alabama. There, he lived alone for a number of years in a small enclosure with very little sunlight.

In 2016, Save the Chimps gained custody of Joe. Among his first human greeters was Jane Goodall, a member of our Advisory Council. Their encounter was captured on video:

Joe made even more friends when he arrived at his new home in Florida, joining Late’s family on Air Force Island and growing especially close bonds with Kaleb, Dwight, Ridge, and Clay. Known for his big smile, generous hugs, and playful personality, he loved to explore his island and climb the tallest platforms for a view of the sanctuary.

Sweet Joe will always hold a special place in our hearts and will be deeply missed by all of us at Save the Chimps.
