We at Save the Chimps are excited to introduce you to our more than 250 amazing chimpanzee residents! Each month we will feature one of the 12 islands here at Sanctuary so that you can get to know the chimps that make up the family group and have an understanding of how they came to be.
As we kick off 2015, we would like to introduce you to Air Force Island, home to Late’s family. The island was originally designed and built for Save the Chimps’ first residents – 21 of the original Air Force chimps. Sadly over time, many of the elder chimpanzees have passed. Today there are nine surviving Air Force chimpanzees at Save the Chimps and they have since been integrated into new family groups.
Late’s family consists of chimpanzees rescued from both The Coulston Foundation and Wildlife Animal Orphanage, an animal rescue that went bankrupt in 2011 and needed a home for it’s chimpanzees.
Late’s family hosts a multitude of personalities from Wally’s energetic antics to Ace who can often be found relaxing on the 3-acre island.
