I was born March 21, 1993, at the Coulston Foundation in Alamogordo, NM to my mother Lupe, and my father Dave. Unlike most chimps born at Coulston, I was not immediately taken from my mother. Instead, I was raised for two years. Regardless, my eventual fate was like that of the other chimps: at age 2, I was taken from my mother. I spent the next seven years in a cage, anesthetized for physicals four times per year but was never assigned to a biomedical research study.
In 2002, Save the Chimps took over the Coulston Foundation and rescued me and the other 265 chimpanzees residing there. After introductions, I became a part of Rufus’s family. I am very smart and observant. In fact, Dr. Noon was known to describe me as a genius. I like to make tools out of things I find on the island and love to trade things for treats. These days, I am a happy-go-lucky girl who enjoys my family time on the island in the beautiful Florida sun.
