Second Group Arrives
THE FIRST ARRIVALS
When the first group of 11 chimpanzees arrived at the Sanctuary from the
Coulston Foundation we were surprised at how calm they were after their
two-day road trip in small cages. We expected some outraged chimps with a
long list of complaints that they would let us know about in that
high-pitched, ear-shattering chimpanzee way when we opened the doors to the
trailer that brought them. Instead, they took a quiet look around.
We started introducing the strangers to each other right away, a process
that could have taken a few months or a year. We were again surprised with
how quickly they started to form a family and within two weeks they were
living as one group. We figured all the sweethearts had been sent in the
first group and the second group would be our payback.
THE SECOND GROUP ARRIVES
Another surprise - the second group are a bunch of sweethearts too. We have
started introducing the strangers in this group to each other and the next
step will be introducing them to the first group. Once the two groups form a
family we will release them onto their new island home.
