New Chimps Arrive at Sanctuary

The first group of 11 chimpanzees (six females and five males) arrived at the Sanctuary on April 22, 2001. They were admirably calm after a two day road trip from New Mexico when we opened the doors to the trailer. A few hoots, a good look around and then they took the food and drink we offered. All the chimps had their chests and thighs shaved so that tattoo numbers could be seen for ease of identifying individuals and we quickly set about learning their names.

There were plenty of humans to welcome the chimpanzees to their new home - Sanctuary director, Carole Noon; Sanctuary treasure and board member, Lori Raab; consulting veterinarian, Jim Mahoney; attending veterinarian, Clem Darrow; a caretaker from the Coulston Foundation who knows the chimps well, Holly Harvey; founder of the Fauna Foundation, Gloria Grow; their current caretakers at the Sanctuary, and a wonderful group of volunteers headed by Arlene Brahm.

The males all knew one another and had previously lived together in a group at the Coulston Foundation as did the females - but the males and females had never met. We began introducing the strangers to each other right away and now all 11 are living in one group. In the 6 weeks that the chimps have been at the Sanctuary they are becoming more familiar with their new home and their confidence has grown. They are physically stronger and more playful - some are getting downright cocky!
