N E W S One Giant Step After the Air Force chimpanzees arrived at the Sanctuary we began introducing them to each other in the Introduction Building which was built just for this purpose. We had hoped to put together a group of at least 15 never expecting all 20 would form a community but that is exactly what they did. With the chimpanzees living as a family we opened the doors to the three-acre island. Asking them to go out the open doors was asking a lot from them. After spending all or most of their lives in a cage with cement under their feet, four walls surrounding them and a ceiling over their heads we figured four or five of them might venture onto the island.
