How Abby from Littleton, Colorado Helped to Save the Chimps
My name is Abby. I am a Third Grader in Littleton, Colorado. And I LOVE CHIMPS!
My interest in Chimpanzees started about a year ago, when I got a stuffed chimp for a present. I read everything and watched everything I could about chimps. My big concern was... were they endangered? One day last summer my mom and I found the website for Save the Chimps. I read about the Air Force Chimps. I couldn't believe they were sending the chimps to be used for more research. I was very sad about that. Then I GOT MAD. I told my parents to send money to help the chimps. They told me I could earn money doing jobs around the house. I knew that would take a long time to earn enough to do any good. My mom asked me if I cared enough about the chimps to sell my Beanie Baby collection. I collected them for four years, and had way over one hundred. I thought it was a great idea!
I set a date for my sale. My teacher gave me time to give a talk to my class and hand out flyers. My mom and a friend of hers at work baked cookies, cakes and breads to sell. My parents donated a stuffed chimp to raffle. I sold the tickets for $.50. I found toys that I had outgrown to sell. I put signs around the neighborhood announcing the sale. I also put a bucket out so people could give a cash donation to the chimps. I talked to everyone I could about the sad things going on with the USAF chimps. A lot of people had not heard the news. I raised $1,000. My mom's work, Oppenheimer Funds matched our donation. My efforts raised $2,000 to help relocate the chimps to a reserve.
Please use your imaginations and think of ways you can earn money for the chimps. It was really fun and I AM SO PROUD AND HAPPY!!!
