Sadly, most of the chimpanzees at Save the Chimps have been separated from their biological families. Many were torn from their mother’s arms as young infants and some, later had their newborn children taken from them. As a result, prior to joining us, most of our chimpanzees lived alone in small, gloomy dungeon-like concrete boxes – some for as long as 40 years. Like us, chimpanzees learn a tremendous amount from being raised by their parents and most stay very close to their parents and siblings during their entire lifetime.
Eventually, Save the Chimps socialized and introduced our chimpanzees to one another so that they formed new communities and groups, which now enjoy natural behaviors and interactions that they have been denied for so long. Some of the simple actions they are now able to enjoy are hugging, grooming, playing and using their intellect through various activities – things we take for granted every day. While these groups exhibit very close and supportive relationships and offer a quality of life vastly better than their prior living conditions, these types of groups do not replace the bond generated by a parent-child relationship.
This is where you come in. Although you can’t take a chimpanzee home with you or replace his or her mother or father, you can protect, support and love a chimpanzee like a parent. Through our Adoption Program, you can commit to support a chimpanzee of your choice, so that his or her world is never again seen through metal bars. As an Adoptive Parent, you will receive adoption papers including a certificate of adoption, a biography and a photo of your chimpanzee.
For an annual commitment of $120 you can adopt a chimp, which includes your honorary membership in Save the Chimps. That's just $0.33 a day...a small price to pay for such a large gift and reward. Your adoption fee can help Save the Chimps pay for many of its needs such as: the three fresh meals of fruits and vegetables our chimpanzees receive daily, our loving caretaking staff, the maintenance of the gorgeous islands our chimpanzees live on, and toys and activities for the chimps. If you can't adopt, please consider making a donation in any amount you can. Every donation, regardless of amount, helps.
We hope that when you read the biographies of the chimpanzees available for adoption you will not be able to resist joining our Adoption Program and adding a chimpanzee to your own family.
